A group of AST tortoises have approached the school administration requesting their help to be saved. Indeed they found out that the University of New England will soon start the construction of their future campus within the school property.

Various groups of students from Grade 3 and 5 as well as some high school students started immediately on looking for the tortoises inside the school’s forest and after about a month 51 (fifty one!) tortoises and two eggs have been collected and taken to a safe place by the pool.

Thanks to the help of Abdelilah a terrarium was built and our tortoises are all very happy! The 5th grade class has worked on a project to design a sign that will give all the important information on this sweet and peaceful reptile.

More about our tortoises…

Our tortoises are spur-thighed tortoises, also known as Greek tortoises (testudo graeca). They can live to be over 100 years old! More information here.
